Herbal Supplements: A Growing Cause of Liver Damage

New Study Highlights Prevalence and Dangers of Herbal-Induced Liver Injury

As the use of herbal supplements continues to rise, so too does the risk of liver damage caused by these products. A recent study by University of Michigan health researchers in Ann Arbor has shed light on this growing problem, examining data from 2017 to 2021 that covered a staggering 9685 cases.

The study, published in the journal Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, found that herbal-induced liver injury (HILI) is on the rise, with an increasing number of new cases being reported each year. The researchers attributed this increase to the growing popularity of herbal supplements, both in the United States and worldwide.

One of the most common herbs linked to liver damage is senna (Cassia species), a popular laxative that can cause liver injury when used in high doses for longer than recommended. Other herbs that have been associated with HILI include kava, ephedra, and comfrey.

The researchers emphasized the importance of patients being aware of the potential risks of herbal supplements and consulting with their healthcare provider before using them. They also called for stricter regulation of the herbal supplement industry to ensure the safety of these products.
